Having a gas run appliance or pipelines running through our home is standard nowadays. A small leak in there might be a cause of a fatal explosion. Given that it is difficult to spot leaks and pinpoint the exact source of smell, we should keep a gas leak detector. We have reviewed and tested the most sought-after gas leak detectors, which are effective yet budget-friendly.
Klein Tools ET120 Gas Leak Detector
This gas detector from Klein Tools is a user-friendly detector that provides audible and visual alarms in the presence of methane, propane, and other combustible gases. The sensor will signal at concentrations as low as 50 ppm. It is perhaps the perfect choice for HVAC professionals and homeowners.
This device responds to changes in the amount of gas within 1-2 seconds. You can quickly sweep around and pinpoint the source. It takes one minute to warm up and calibrate in the fresh air. You enter the area on high sensitivity, switch to low when you max out and continue until you find the source. I have owned other Klein tools in the past, and they have never disappointed me.
Alopex Combustible Gas Detector
The Apolex gas detector can detect various combustible gas leaks, including methane or natural gas, propane, ethane, coal gas, gas oil, gasoline, toluene, alcohol, ketone, and other flammable gases. This portable gas sniffer can be taken anywhere to find leaks along gas pipelines, propane tank stations, or fuel lines. The unit runs on a low battery indicator featuring an audible buzzer. Moreover, a 14-inch flexible probe allows location and detection of leaks in hard-to-reach and confined spaces. It will alert you using six red LED and 85dB audible alerts that increase with gas concentration.
This gas detector is one of the most sensitive ones I have held. I smelled gas in the garage. So, I called a technician right away, but they could not find the leak. I was still smelling gas and ordered this on Amazon. This arrived the next day, then I checked for a leak myself. It immediately picked up gas and the source. I have used a pen-style gas detector before this, but it didn’t work.
Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector
This gas detector is excellent in terms of operation and installation. Two AA batteries power the Kidde smoke & carbon monoxide detector. It uses ionization sensing technology. It works with a combination smoke alarm that warns with alarms, LED lights, & voice alerts. The alarm will sound with four fast beeps and warn ‘carbon monoxide’ on the speaker for carbon monoxide detection. In case of smoke, the alarm will sound with three beeps and announce ‘Fire.’ A red LED will flash in unison with the voice alarm that warns of fire, carbon monoxide, & low battery. Also, it has a Smart Hush feature that silences the fire alarm for approximately 8 minutes.
This alarm saved my family’s life once. It started screaming, “carbon monoxide!”. We called the fire department, and they said they detected low levels of the deadly gas in our house from a wall heater. Carbon monoxide is odorless and will kill you. Hence, it’s impossible to tell if carbon monoxide is leaking somewhere without this detector or other. My last unit lasted over five years before it started indicating that it was past the expiration date and stopped functioning.
Elitech WJL-6000 Freon Gas Leak Detector
This gas detector is surprisingly good for the price. I had an A/C leak in my 1994 Jeep forever. I could have called the mechanic, but I decided to find it myself to avoid the expenses. I was looking for a handy portable gas leak detector and found this. The delivery came two days later. I unboxed the package and calibrated the device as instructed in the manual. Within a minute of using it, I managed to find the leak.
Specifically, it helped me confirm that the valves on both high and low AC service ports were leaking. It showed me that I needed to replace the cores in both valves. It subsequently helped me to confirm that my core replacements worked and sealed the leaks I was previously detecting. When searching for leaks in unknown locations, please start with the highest sensitivity level, then gradually decrease it until you pinpoint the exact location of the leak. But you have to keep in mind that it is auto compensating. Hence, it will compensate for the leak within seconds of locating it. Thus it would help if you cleared the sensor by turning it off and on again.
Vzmcov Rechargeable Gas Detector
This handheld gas detector can sense four types of gases. It has been equipped with high-quality imported gas sensors. Those sensors have excellent sensitivity and repeatability. All units come calibrated from the factory as default. You can open the box and use it right away. This gas detector has a compact size and unique clip design. It is very convenient for users to carry around. It is widely used in petroleum, metallurgy, chemical industry, where it can effectively ensure the environment’s safety.
The alarm system in this model has three methods. It will alert you with a human voice which is an adjustable audio feature. Also, the visual and vibration alarms activate when it reaches the preset levels. It will display accurately measured gas concentration with an easy-to-read number shown on the screen. The package comes with a rechargeable lithium battery. The battery has a massive capacity of 1800 mah long enough for continuous working time. Overall, this appears to have a low price, but it’s not a cheap product!
Techamor Y201 Portable Gas Leak Detector
This portable natural gas detector can be used to pinpoint exact gas leaking spots. Almost all major types of combustible gases such as methane, propane, LPG, sewer gas, coal gas, gasoline, other flammable gas leakages can be prevented. This model runs on 3 AAA batteries. The 12-inch bendable gooseneck can locate and detect gas leaks even in hard-to-reach spots. Its alarm system has six red LEDs and an 85dB audible alert. The alarm system activates whenever it encounters gas leakage along the pipeline or around the suspected leakage points.
I bought this because I kept smelling gas coming from my kitchen drawers next to my gas stove and near my gas dryer. No one else could smell it. This thing alerted when brought near both places. The gas company came out and confirmed a leak behind the drawers where the gas line goes into the wall. What’s weird is the gas company’s detector did not detect anything at first. We had to turn on the gas stove first to detect the leak. Also, their detector did not detect anything behind the dryer, so I just tightened the connection to the gas line myself. This gas detector appears to be very sensitive.
Kidde Nighthawk Gas Detector
An AC connection powers the Kidde KN-COEG-3. Just buy and plug it in. It can detect carbon monoxide and other explosive gases. The alarm system protects your house and your family from deadly threats. The KN-COEG-3 includes a 9-Volt battery backup that protects during a power outage. Especially when AC-only units can not provide protection. By pressing the peak level button, you can see the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous digital display shows you the level of carbon monoxide (if any) the unit is sensing and if gas is present. The gas sensor is a metal oxide sensor designed to detect natural gas (methane) or propane.
I didn’t have a natural gas detector, so I got this one to put in my basement, which is the only place in my home with natural gas. Installation is easy. Just plug it in. The plug portion can be removed from the back of the unit, and the main part is located at a different level than the plug. Natural gas is lighter than air, and propane is heavier, so they recommend that it be located high in the room if you have natural gas and low if you have propane.
Hstmyfs Natural Digital Gas Detector
This natural gas detector is suitable for detecting methane, natural gas, fuel gas, carbon monoxide, liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied natural gas, etc. The unit also offers voice notification and a digital display of the gas concentration. When the gas leak concentration reaches a presetting level, the alarm provides a visual and audible signal. The model has an 85dB alarm sound. Having one of these reduces the risk of gas explosion and protects your family’s life and property.
This leak detector allows easy-to-install operation. You can use it simply by plugging directly into the power socket to detect leaked gas. The system’s warm-up time is about 2-3 minutes. During this time period, the gas test will not work. It would be best to wait for the display to appear when the system enters the working state. The product does what it is meant to do, so no complaint on that.
EG Propane/Natural Gas Detector
This gas detector can play a vital role in preventing explosion or suffocation in the house due to gas leaks. Its alarm will sound an 80dB siren and speak voice alerts with top flashing red light when it detects combustible gases. The gases it detects include methane, Lng, or camping propane before it reaches an explosive level leading to fires. You will feel more assured that your house is safe. The device precisely measures and displays the concentration of combustible gas as an easy-to-read percentage from 0% to 20% of LEL.
You can view the concentration of combustible gas on the LED screen before it reaches its explosive threatening level. The audible siren and speaking alarm turn on when the gas level reaches 5% of LEL. This alarm uses less than three watts of electricity. Thus, it has a small energy footprint. This alarm will also help prevent someone from leaving on the stove, saving up on your gas bill.
As with most combustible gas detectors, there is gradual degradation over time as the sensor for these detectors uses something similar to a heating element. It would be important to test the item intermittently, at least once per month if you wish to increase reliability. I would recommend this unit to everyone, which is very small and extremely sensitive to odorless gas and great value for money.
EG Home Gas Leak Sensor
I came across this gas detector on Amazon and ordered this because of its low price. Upon receiving the delivery package, I tested this with my gas source. The alarm immediately sounded, and I feel that it might be reliable. It was easy to install. In fact, all you have to do is mount it on the wall/ceiling.
We have always had natural gas until now. We have a small home with several propane products. I know it works because, as instructed for a test, I took a lighter, and without lighting it, I just pushed the lighter valve open and waved it underneath, and it alarmed me right away.
It lets me rest easy at night. Most people don’t know that a carbon monoxide detector does not detect methane. These are totally different compounds, and you need to have a detector for each. I strongly recommend the purchase of this product!
