Summer evenings are more enjoyable during a movie night out in the backyard. Though we do have projectors for use inside the house, they do not perform well outdoors due to extra light. Outdoor projectors need to be brighter. Hence, they need to have significantly higher lumens. Since projectors are pricey devices, we have carefully chosen and reviewed each item so that you get the best bang for your buck.

Optoma HD146X

At this price point, the picture quality went beyond my expectations. The brightness levels are insane, especially when I was watching a movie in my backyard. The colors just popped up and projecting onto a 100-inch screen. I did not feel the need to upgrade to a 4k. The images and movies are razor-sharp. The projector out of the box is set to high contrast, vivid and bright mode. The fan sounded like a jet taking off. I was worried for a bit until I switched it to echo mode. It went from a loud blow dryer to whisper quiet.

The HD 146X has the latest technology from Texas Instruments. Its DLP DMD single-chip design ensures perfect image alignment combined with high brightness for incredible picture quality. HDMI-CEC technology enables control of the projector and connected devices using a single remote, all via the HDMI connection with the projectors HDMI-Link feature. The long lamp life of 15000 hours enables an average of 4 hours of viewing time every day for more than 10 years.

Epson Pro EX7280

This projector seemed quite powerful for its price. I really liked how this projector’s bulb performs in the daylight. Even in well-lit conditions, you can still see the projector screen. The size of this projector is pretty big, so you need to make sure you have enough space.

This projector delivers crystal clear and sharp pictures while giving you multiple media options. Compared to similar projectors in the market, this one is by far one of the best projectors to get if you are going to use it outdoors. Many projectors I have used previously do not work well outside, but this one keeps its promise.

This unit only has one HDMI port (and an old VGA port), but you could get around if you happen to have an HDMI switch. There are also USB ports to connect power to your Chromecast. I honestly use it more for powering the Chromecast as I like casting onto the projector. The video resolution is pretty close to 1080p, from what I have seen. In fact, I have tried to play games on it, too, and it works pretty well for most games.

Pros
  • Stunning Picture Quality.
  • Bright pictures outdoors.
  • Easy to setup.
Cons
  • Bulky.

For outdoor media consumption, you have an incredible 4,000 lumens of brightness for viewing. A 6 segment color wheel (RYGCWB) produces accurate color with sRGB & REC.709 color profile.

The connectivity options are incredible. You can connect to gaming consoles, media players, and other HDMI devices such as Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick, and Apple TV; inputs include dual HDMI (1.4a 3D support). The unit has a long lamp life. You will get to enjoy up to 15000 hours of lamp life, enabling an average of 4 hours of viewing time every day for at least 10 years.

This projector is a major upgrade from the Optoma GT1080 I had before. It’s brighter, clearer, and even quieter. Also, when switching scenes between light to dark and vise versa are spectacular. It’s not grainy. It’s not too dark. It doesn’t lose color.

I have used it extensively for PowerPoint presentations and movie nights outdoors. I took it at many locations with varying degrees of lighting. I always carry my own projector with me because this one serves much better than whatever is available elsewhere. It is so bright that audiences do not face any visibility issues in places with more ambient light.

Additionally, it’s straightforward to set up. Also, it’s certainly easy to use. The colors are natural and accurate, and the images are very sharp and clear. I carefully researched projectors, and this one has been perfect for me. I appreciate its easy and intuitive buttons for adjusting the image so that it fits the screen. The on and off times are much shorter than most projectors I have used before. I would highly recommend this projector.
